Sacred Places – musings of a chaplain

Significant

Aren’t five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them is overlooked by God. Even the hairs on your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows (Luke 12:6-7 CEB)

Do you ever feel unnoticed? Do you ever see yourself as unimportant? I have.

The words from an old song ring in my ear, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me…” I can still hear those lyrics in my head from when I was a little girl. My dad would listen to a recording by Kitty Wells and it would resonate through the living room. I knew the song long before I ever read the above verses from Scripture. The words from this song are still stuck in my head.

His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.”

Sparrows, common, plain birds seem small and insignificant. In nature’s economy they are hardly noticed even though they count in the millions. These small birds, between 4 to 8 inches with a short life span seem to be hardly noticed. How many times do we notice the sparrows? Yet, as minor as them seem, God sees them and knows them. Not a single one will fall to the ground without Our Heavenly Father knowing or caring for their welfare.

We may seem ordinary and insignificant in the sea of social media and pop culture but we are of great importance to Our Creator. God does not overlook us, creating us with significant worth. We are seen, valuable and precious.

Sparrows are common, yet God does not overlook them

Because of our importance, the hairs on our heads are numbered. Numbering the hairs on our head takes constant calculation with new hair growth and with daily hair loss. God must be a superb mathematician to keep track of all the gains and losses of hairs on our head. I rarely think of the number of hairs that I have but God does. Our joys, sorrows, gains and losses, are tracked by God. Each tear, each moment of laughter, each ache is known by God. We are of great value and God is aware of each hurt and each time we rejoice.

Our joys and sorrows are tracked by the One who loves us

When we lose a loved one, we remember and ache but sometimes others forget about a loved one we have lost. Out of sight, out of mind. But God does not forget about that loved one! As the sparrow is important to God, so is our loved one with their memory.

His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.”

Let your importance to God soak into your heart and mind like a pouring rain. As you go about your day, remind yourself of your great worth to God.

Heavenly Father,

You made us and know us well, even counting the hairs of our head. We are of great worth, significance and importance to you, more worth than a simple, common sparrow. May this awareness of your love and care soak into our hearts and minds. May we feel your love today. Amen

“His Eye is on the Sparrow” sung by Lauryn Hill and Tanya Boult https://youtu.be/k7Pk5YMkEcg

Lyrics

Why should I be discouraged and why should the shadows fall?
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion, my constant Friend is He,
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

I sing because I’m happy;
I sing because I’m free;
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.

Let not your heart be troubled; these tender words I hear;
And resting on his goodness I lose my doubts and fears;
For by the path He leadeth but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

I sing because I’m happy;
I sing because I’m free;
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted; whenever clouds arise;
When songs give place to sighing; when hope within me dies;
I draw the closer to Him; from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

I sing because I’m happy;
I sing because I’m free;
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me…
